Onam is the harvest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam Festival is celebrated in the beginning of the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kolla Varsham) called Chingam. It comes in August-September as per Gregorian calendar and Bhadrapada or Bhadon as per Indian (Hindu) Calendar. It is celebrated to mark the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. King Mahabali was an Asura king of Kerala who ruled over Kerala in the age of plenty and all are equal.
Some of the most remarkable features of Onam are intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance. Onam festival is of ten days, starting from the day of Atham and culminating on Thiru Onam which brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. On this day, People take early bath and go to their local temple. To welcome King Mahabali, Women make Pookkallam in the front courtyard of house or the flower carpet starts from this day. On Onam, two graceful dances, Kaikotti kali and Thumbi Thullal performed by women.
The significance of the Ona Sadya is established from the popular Malayalam saying “kanam vittum onam unnanam”. Onam is celebrated over four days - Onnam Onam or First Onam is on 22nd August, 2010. Second Onam or the most important day of Onam is the Thiruonam and it is on 23rd August. Third Onam or Munnam Onam is on 24th August. Fourth Onam or Naalam Onam is on 25th August.
